One Room Challenge Week 1: Master Bedroom Makeover

Yesterday was the first day of the first One Room Challenge of 2014 for 20 talented professional designers to redo a room in their home or clients home in six weeks. Today is the first day for all of us interior designers and DIYer at heart and professional bloggers like myself! 

One Room Challenge was created by Linda from Calling it Home, who is an extremely talented and creative designer.  However, it was the talented Sarah Fisher with Matters of Style that inspired me to participate after following her son’s bedroom redo.  Check out her room here:

While the 20 professional designers will be updating you on their rooms every Wednesday for the next six weeks, I will be joining a crew who will be updating you on our room progress on Thursdays. 

I will be working on our master bedroom.  To give you some background, we moved into our house a year ago, 4 weeks before my second daughter was born.  Having two young kids so close together and moving has left me with little time to design and decorate.  That being said, we are almost finished with every room, except our master bedroom.

At first glance it doesn’t look too horrible.

However, if you move your eye around the room you will notice it’s not finished and the look needs to be pulled together.

Here is the wall to the left of the doorway as you walk into the room.

In order to give you my full plan of where I am going with our master bedroom I want to share what it looked like before we moved in. 

As you can see from the above before photo the master bedroom was very neutral and modern.  Where as the look I’m going for is shabby chic with a twist of modern using shades of blues, white, and neutrals.  I want our bedroom to be elegant and tranquil. While my husband suggested putting a desk in our bedroom I had to veto it for this very reason. Having a desk with papers, bill, and a to do list is anything but tranquil and doesn’t allow us an escape from all the hustle and bustle of the day. 

Here is my wish list that I would like to conquer in the next six weeks:  Nail head on the upholstered headboard, fabric trim on the upholstered headboard, replace the broken beveled mirror and hang above the dark wood dresser, hang art work above the bed, find a grey or neutral arm chair to replace the current one, find a bench to put at the foot of the bed, add large print throw pillows to the bedding, and hang a group of small mirrors on the front wall or next to the arm chair. The one item that has been bothering me ever since we moved into our home are the modern wall scones. I’m not sure if it’s feasible but I would LOVE to replace them with smaller silver ones.

Now that you know where I am going with the room design here is what is inspiring me!

Love the look of this upholstered bed with nail head and fabric trim by the talented Courtney with A Thoughtful Place! I’m also loving the large throw pillows that pull her look together.

I have been pinning over this Carey Blue Storage Bench Ottoman for a few years now! I love the elegant but simple look and of course the color.

 

The grey blue colors in the above wall art collection from Ballard Designs would go perfectly above our upholstered bed.

 

The grey nail head arm chair found on Joss and Main would complete the look in our master bedroom by adding function and comfort.

I love the design of this inlay antique mirror set that matches well with our double white dresser.

Now that I have introduce my room to y’all I hope you will join me in this six week journey as I put my design plan to the test! It will no doubt be challenging but I can’t wait for the final reveal!
