If you missed all the Thanksgiving inspiration you can check it out here.
After receiving rave reviews and requests for the recipe, I’m finally sharing a family favorite that started with my Southern grandmother: Mama’s Cranberry and Apple Dish.
This dish is a Thanksgiving and Christmas tradition in our family. It’s good with turkey anytime and will wow you’re guests!
Mama’s Cranberry & Apple Dish
Ingredients: Serves 6-8
- 3 cups sliced, peeled gala apples
- 2 cups raw cranberries
- 3/4 cup sugar or Splenda
- 1 stick melted butter
- 1/3 cup flour
- 3/4 cup of brown sugar of Splenda brown sugar
- 1 cup uncooked oatmeal
- 1/2 cup of chopped pecans
Put apples and cranberries in layers in a baking dish. Sprinkle sugar or Splenda on top. Melt the butter and mix with flour, brown sugar, oatmeal and pecans. Spread mixture over the top layer of apples and cranberries. Cook at 350 degrees for 45-60 minutes. Serve immediately with turkey and sides.
This recipe was first published in America Discovers Columbus, a collection of recipes for easy entertaining from The Junior League of Columbus, when my mother was cookbook chairman. It has come full circle as I’ve started my own family in Charlotte, NC, where my mother was born and raised, and I’m currently a member of Junior League of Charlotte.
Hope this inspires you to start your own Thanksgiving and Christmas tradition!

That looks amazing! I’m not a fan of just plain cranberry sauce for some reason, but this I could do. I may have to give it a try at our table this year!
Alison, me neither! It’s a great combo of sweet & savory that seriously everyone loves!
looks delish!! I’ll be print this one out! Thank you!
Thanks Chelsea! I hope you try it & come back and tell me what you think!
I love the idea of using the mini pumpkins for the placeholders!! I am going to do this for my table. Sounds like a great recipe to make for Thanksgiving morning too.
Thanks Jenny! It add a personal touch to your tablescape. Can’t wait to see what you do!
This sounds amazing! I know my husband would love it.
Stephanie, thank you! Honestly, it’s the perfect combo of sweet & savory! Plus great as left overs!
Mmmm….this looks like cobbler. I love cobbler, and fall, and the holidays, and I just want to dig right in to that dessert! Pinned!
Thank you for stopping by! Yes, similar to cobbler except it’s bitter and a little sweet. Glad you liked it enough to pin it!
I love that you have a fruity side dish besides the traditional cranberries sauce. I will be using this! It sounds fantastic!
I’m so glad you have a new dish to serve this Thanksgiving! You’ll have to tell me how it turns out!
I just love Thanksgiving! The cranberry apple dish looks so so good!
Madison, thank you! Me too, I’m getting exciting for all the cooking and of course eating!

Patricia, many thanks!
Wow this look delicious. I wish we till had family traditions but my brothers just can’t get along.
Becca, many thanks! Make your own family tradition! This will be the 2nd year I’m cooking and we are not with my side of the family or my husbands. Instead, we are sharing Thanksgiving with neighborhood friends. 🙂
This sounds really delicious!!! I will definitely have to try it!
Artney, many thanks for stopping by and your kind words! I can’t wait to hear how it turns out!
That sounds good. I have that Switch Three china that the apple cranberry dish is in. I don’t have that particular dish though and I wish I did after seeing yours.
Ha, yes I LOVE the pattern! My Villeroy & Boch china is a different pattern, but got this for a wedding gift.
Mmmmm, I was sold on the pecans!
Thanks Beth!
Love this!! Cranberries are my fave Thanksgiving flavor, but sometimes just plain old cranberry sauce can be boring. I like that this still highlights the cranberry flavor but has other delicious ingredients too!
Thanks Cristin! I couldn’t agree with you more! I’m not a huge fan of cranberry sauce, but this is by far my favorite dish and perfect to dip the turkey into!
I love cranberries and apples, and my daughters do, too, so I should give this a try!
I hope you try it and let me know what you think!
I’ve been looking to do something new with cranberries! Sounds great!!
Many thanks Christine!
Yum! This looks like a great recipe! And I love that it doesn’t use regular sugar.
Many thanks Carissa!
I will have to try this. I have Truvia brown sugar blend that I can probably use instead of the splenda.
Wow. I felt like I was seeing the Death Star for the first time when I laid eyes on that dish.
Just, wow.
In fact, I’d like to try to make this before 2014 is over. Unless I can get someone to make it for me first.
*Glad to have found you through the Hump Day Happenings linkup.
That looks amazing! Thank you so much for sharing at the (extra-long) #homematters linky party! A brand new party starts TOMORROW! We hope to see you then! 🙂
