It’s week 4 in the 6 week design challenge, otherwise known as One Room Challenge, hosted by Linda from Calling it Home. Week 4 is always the hardest because reality sinks in with budget constraints, limited options for items to be delivered in time, and time management challenges to finish the never ending to do list.
If you’re just joining the fun you can get caught up on Week 1 || Week 2|| Week 3. In week 1 I introduced you to my current event design office known as Sarah Sofia Productions and laid out my plan for transforming it into a glam office fit to inspire all my event design and planning!
In week 2 I showed you more details of my office and the progress such as finding these glam accessories!
In week 3 I was successful in completing several DIY projects such as these fun marquee letters for SSP headquarters!
Week 4 has been a productive but long week. For starters my husband has been out of town and I’ve been holding down the fort with my two girls and our furry boy Bailey. That being said I made some major decisions such as my glam desk. Remember this beauty that started my inspiration for this glam office makeover?
While I desperately wish this glam bamboo inspired desk will be delivered to my home, it sadly is not in my budget. However, you can get the details of this stunning piece and all my highlights from High Point Furniture Market Fall 2014 here.
I started brainstorming on how I could make my current desk more glam. This image of a gold leaf DIY desk has been inspiring me for months.
I love that this desk is an Ikea hack, but didn’t want to reinvest in an Ikea desk when I already started glamming up the one I own. After doing extensive research on the gold leaf processes and how time consuming and frustrating it can be I was a little discouraged and almost decided to go with marble contact paper for the desk top. However, I took the plunge and bought gold leafing products from JoAnn Fabrics online and I’m ready to dive into this DIY project once everything arrives later this week.
I decided to go ahead and splurge on a coral, mint and gold tissue paper garland that will be arriving later this week.
Other fun DIY projects this week included painting the fabric board I found at HomeGoods coral to match my campaign, framing special pieces from my work in DC, weddings, and events.
Here’s my running to do list for Operation Sarah Sofia Productions (SSP) Headquaters:
- Buy Ikea glass shelves, spray paint gold and add marble contact paper -Leaning towards keeping my white shelves and adding gold leaf trim.
- Buy desk or make current one more lux – In Progress, waiting on gold leaf supplies

Accent wall above coral campaign with either removable wallpaper or stencil– Decided look is too busy and adding stencil somewhere else in the room.Buy curtainsBuy rug- Paint silver chandelier gold – In Progress, waiting on gold leaf and run n’ buff supplies since I don’t want to take chandelier down.
Buy small seating for vignette– No longer in my budget and don’t wont the room to look too cluttered.Gold bar cart for happy hour!! (Don’t get me started on the faux bamboo glam bar cart I passed up at HomeGoods last fall or the great looking pieces from Target!)-No longer in my budget and I have too many other long table top pieces that the design just won’t work.Accents for coral campaignNate Berkus gold dog tape dispenser- DIY spray paint gold scissors to match gold tape dispenser
Hang curtains (I’ve done this twice and it’s fallen down)Move hanging wire basket to wall behind the door and hang wall décorPaint existing picture framesand get new matting- Purchase SSP marquee metal light letters for gallery wall and get my DIY design on! – In Progress
Decide on sunburst mirror to hang on current wall mirror-Decided current framed wall décor and framed art work would look better and fits my budget.

I think it’s so important to work from a place that inspires you – especially if it’s a part of your own home. Great colors and accessories in your plan, but most of all I love that you are designing a space that will inspire all those detailed and fun events you work so hard to pull together! The gold leafing is really not that bad. Put on some music and pour a glass of wine. Have fun with it- it’s messy though. Have your shop vac ready and clean debris as you go (or else you’ll track it all over the house).
Sarah Sofia Knepp says
Erin, thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement! You made my day! Great tips, I will have to plan accordingly. I just heard it’s time consuming and messy. Let’s do this! XOXO, Sarah
