It’s Week 2 of Fall 2015 One Room Challenge hosted by Linda from Calling It Home!
Last week I gave you an inside look at my other One Room Challenge (ORC) rooms, including 3 other rooms I decided to update last spring in addition to my Glam Office! I also introduced you to this ORC’s room, our living room, with some before photos and lots of inspiration.
If you missed it Week 1, you can get all caught up here.
This week is all about my plan to refresh our living room to look more custom, my running to do list and what I’ve accomplished.
First up is deciding what fabric to re-upholser my thrift find arm chair and custom pillows to refresh our living room.
I’ve had my heart on two toned chairs for a few years now and finally get to do it in our living room!
I have a major crush on anything trellis these days and Schumacher! This Imperial Trellis II in Ivory Navy from Schumacher is the perfect fabric to re-upholster the arm chair, but out of my budget.
I love this two toned coral arm chair with nailhead trim, but trying to add more blue and white.
Using my inspiration from above and fabrics from New South Home Couture my next step was to design my inspiration board.
I’m using all four New South Home Couture fabrics shown above (Untamed Coral, Linen Weave Navy, Linen Weave Cream, Knots Navy) and Cream Linen Weave with Zebra Tape (not shown) to re-upholster the arm chair and add accent pillows. The Knots Navy, while not an exact match to the Imperial Trellis II in Ivory Navy from Schumacher, is a close second and fits in my budget!
This living room has great bones and major pieces already. Mixing classic costal colors and adding in modern fabrics will complete the room and make it feel more custom.
I want to add mirrored framed seashell prints next to the arm chair. I currently have one framed box of seashells, but it’s small and looks awkward hanging alone on the wall.
I feel in love with this Safavieh Mirror Top Accent
Against the side wall that opens to the front entryway I would like to add a console table. I’ve been wanting to add a buffet in here to double as dinning storage and office storage, but after doing my Glam Office makeover last ORC, I am not sure if I need such a large piece in this room. This is a large rectangle room with enough space that a console table will be perfect to finish the room.
Lastly, I would like to add a few more accessories to finish this room, including a soft blue throw.
You can shop the look here: 1. Untamed Coral Fabric Swatch/ 2. Fabric by the Yard / 3 Fabric by the Yard / 4. Fabric Swatches 5. Framed Shell Prints 6. Safavieh Treasures Kerri Gold/ Mirror Top Accent 7. Seaspray stripe bedding 8. Threshold Windham Console Table
To Do List for $500 under $1000 Living Room Refresh

- Photograph the space
I’ve made some headway in my first week. I’m finalizing my order with New South Couture for the fabric to reupholster the arm chair and pillows today. I’ve been wanting to use the Upholstery Guy for sometime now, and finally have a reason too! He’s not only available and within my budget, he’s turn around is 2-3 weeks right now!
Now for the down side. My budget for this living room refresh started at $500. Fabric, reupholstering the arm chair, and pillows alone put me over $500, which is still a great deal. However, I am still over budget. This means I might not be able to buy all the fun accessories I was planning. The most important item after my current expenses is to purchase framed mirror shell prints. If I can find some at an reasonable price, then I might have some wiggle room in my budget.

Lisa @ Shine Your Light says
Your plan is gorgeous Sarah – love the fabrics you chose!! Sometimes I see those mirror frames with prints in them at Homegoods so maybe keep your eye on the art aisle too – you could always pull out the print and put in your own if you find some on the cheap. Good luck on your hunt!
Sarah Sofia Knepp says
Hey Lisa, many thanks for your kind words and for always being my cheerleader, I need it! I love all your suggestions and HomeGoods was my first stop last week. I know I’ve seem these prints there before, but just the mirrored frames. I might use your suggestion about putting in my own prints in the mirrored frames if I can’t find something on budget. Hopping over now to check out your progress! XOXO, Sarah

I thought about your mirrored shell print dilemma. Just in case you have to get creative. I have used Krylon’s Looking Glass spray paint before. You could try it on some frames to see if they were reflective enough but it’s really formulated to be sprayed on the back of glass to make a mirror effect. You could mask off “mats” on the glass of your frames, leaving an opening for your shell prints in the center and probably simulate the look you want until purchasing the ones you truly want or those may be so fabulous you are set!! And I have a couple of “frameable’ print books sitting in my cart on Amazon right now for less than $20.00 and one is shells. Also Caspari has a great box set of ocean life for framing that is fabulous and under $40.
Good luck those chairs and fabric are worth having to get creative on the rest!

Oh my goodness Marcie you are too kind and creative! Many thanks for your detailed solution and sharing the tricks of the trade with me! I’m going to check out Amazon right now! HomeGoods is usually my go to for budget friendly décor and artwork, but only mirrored frames, no prints. If I can find the prints on Amazon and then frame them that would be a great solution! Schumacher gets me in trouble every. single. time. The ladies at the fabric store probably know me as “that girl who’s always looking for something that looks like Schumacher, but cheaper.” I love your plans for the room and the colors you’re working with–I know this will turn out beautiful just like your other past challenges!
